Now, with the Llogara Tunnel open, you have two options: the fast route through the tunnel or the scenic drive over the pass.
Llogara Tunnel: What to Know in 2026
The Llogara Tunnel officially opened in July 2024. At 5.9 km long, it cuts the drive from Dukat to Palasa from over 30 minutes to just 7 minutes. The maximum speed inside is 80 km/h. The tunnel features modern lighting, ventilation, and an emergency escape tunnel running parallel.
Toll: After the initial free period, the tunnel charges approximately €10 per car (one way). Tip: Check the latest information before your trip as toll rates may vary seasonally.
The Mountain Pass: Why It’s Still Worth Driving
Even though the tunnel is fast and safe, the old road over Llogara Pass remains one of the best driving experiences in Albania. The road climbs through dramatic switchbacks surrounded by pine forests, with viewpoints that reveal the coastline far below. Many travelers consider this the highlight of their Albanian road trip.

What Car Do You Need?
For the tunnel: Any car works fine. For the mountain pass: A car with decent power for the climb is recommended. An SUV like the Skoda Kamiq or Kia Stonic offers better stability. A compact like the Skoda Rapid handles it well too, but be patient on the steeper sections. Do not drive this road at night.
Best Viewpoints
Llogara National Park: Stop at the summit to walk through the forest and enjoy the crisp mountain air. Restaurants at the top of the pass: Try grilled meat with a sea view — prices are surprisingly reasonable. Palasa viewpoint: After the descent, stop to see Palasa Beach from above — one of the most beautiful vistas in Albania.
