If you have ever seen photos of the Albanian Riviera and realized they were not edited — you know exactly how it feels. The blue-green waters, high cliffs, hidden beaches, and villages hanging above the sea make this coastal route one of the most beautiful road trips in the Mediterranean.
The road from Vlora to Saranda, through the Llogara Pass and the Riviera, is around 170 km — but you will never complete it in 2 hours. Because you will stop. Many times.
Starting Point: Vlora or Tirana?
Most tourists start from Tirana, which is 270 km from Saranda. But if you have limited time and want to focus only on the coast, Vlora is the ideal starting point.
From Tirana: take the highway to Fier, then continue to Vlora — around 2.5 hours. From Vlora, the real adventure begins.
Itinerary: Vlora → Saranda with Stops
Km 0 — Vlora
The City of Independence should not be underestimated. Visit the Karaburun Peninsula, where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet, and St. John’s Monastery before heading south.
Km 30 — Llogara Pass, 1,027 m
This is the moment when you stop the car and lose your words. The view from the top of Llogara over the Riviera is simply unbelievable. The pass has a traditional restaurant with qofte and homemade bread — worth the stop even without the panorama.
Tip: This road has sharp curves and steep sections. Do not rush. Never overtake another car on bends.
Km 45 — Palasë & Dhërmi
Two of the most famous beaches of the Riviera. Dhërmi has long beaches with white gravel and crystal-clear water — ideal for a 2–3 hour stop.
Km 65 — Himara
A historic coastal town with Greek roots and excellent seafood cuisine. A must-stop for lunch — try grilled octopus.
Km 80 — Borsh
The village with the longest beach in Albania, 7 km, and one of the least known. If you want a beach without mass tourism, this is the place.
Km 95 — Lukova & Porto Palermo
The Castle of Porto Palermo on the water is one of Albania’s iconic photo spots. Access by car is very close — then a 5-minute walk.
Km 130 — Saranda
Well done! Saranda is the southern gateway — hotels, restaurants, nightlife, and close to Ksamil and Butrint.
Beaches That Are Not Found on Tourist Maps
The advantage of renting a car is this: you can stop where the sacred stops. Some hidden beaches of the Riviera:
- Gjipe Beach — access only by SUV or canoe; untouched water
- Livadhi — little known, very quiet
- Kakome Bay — protected, difficult to reach without a car
How Many Days Do You Need for the Riviera?
| Duration | What Do You See? |
|---|---|
| 1 day (transit) | Llogaraja, Dhërmi, quick stop Himara |
| 2 days | +Borshi, Porto Palermo, beach time |
| 3+ days | Full exploration, hidden beaches, Saranda + Ksamil |
If you only have 1 day, leave Tirana early (7:00 AM) and return late at night — tiring but doable.
What Car to Choose for the Riviera?
The coastal road is good asphalt but with many curves and narrows . Compact cars are suitable — you don’t need an SUV, but it gives extra freedom for the roads to the beaches.
Our recommendation: Dacia Logan or Hyundai i20 for budget; Nissan Qashqai for maximum comfort and flexibility.
